Info For First-time Visitors
We want you to be able to walk into any service we have on offer and feel comfortable. We understand that walking into a church for the first time can be a ‘unique’ experience – where visitors are coming to a place where everyone knows each other and knows how ‘things get done around here.’
We are however confident that once you’re here, it won’t take too long to know your way around! To give you a head start on what to expect, we’ve put this page together. Each point is done in the order that you are likely to encounter it!
The church is located on a corner block, and the entrance faces Frank Hayes Drive. There’s a small amount of parking on the premises, but you’ll find that most people park on the land across the road in a side by side fashion – like the cars in this photo. The council keeps this bit clear for us and it’s got a fair bit of gravel so it holds up well any time of the year. It’s also quite a shady spot in parts. There is no problem if you want to drop people at the door first.
Children are an extremely important to us at Wangaratta Baptist Church and we take seriously the responsibility of supporting parents in discipling and growing their children of all ages, in the knowledge of the Lord. The way this is done changes from time to time according to the needs of the current attenders and our community, but what never changes is our commitment to families.
There is a reserved seating area at the back of the church, a sanctuary for parents of babies and toddlers, with a table and blackboard area set aside for them to play on. The noise most kids make in that area is well received and doesn’t distract the congregation at all. In fact the sound of kids playing in church always brings a smile or two to the older members! We also have baby change facilities in a specialised bathroom.
OK, now tell me about your service!
We usually open with a few up-beat songs with interaction from the congregation. Our music is widely varied and ranges from modern contemporary worship style music to the more traditional well-loved hymns. This is in line with our value to be ageless and make to space for all people to worship in whatever style they relate to best. The common theme is that all our music reflects our love for God and reminds us of his character and his promises to us.
You may be pleased to know that we do our best to avoid the ‘awkward things’ that churches do – you won’t get singled out as a visitor in the public setting, or do the forced ‘meet and greet’ stuff during the service!
After this comes the sermon, and we’re big fans of keeping things SHORT AND TO THE POINT!
After some time to reflect or respond to the teaching of the morning, we are then led in a couple more songs. The entire service goes for around 60-75 minutes. We have a communion service on the first Sunday of each month, and on the third Sunday we do a short presentation about the mission works that we support.
Following the service, the majority of the congregation sticks around for a cuppa and different treats while the kids can play in our secure playground area. Sometimes there is a lunch afterwards, other times such as Mother’s day we will host a special morning tea event.
There is always the chance to stay back afterwards, and our leadership team love to use these times to get to know visitors. By the end of your visit, we hope that if you came with questions about faith, or about our faith community, you leave with some answers! If you would like prayer this is available at any time, please let us know.
If you love your social media, you can find and like us on Facebook. For some, that’s enough!
Others like to get to know us even more, and we of course want that to happen! For this reason we have contact cards at the back of the church. If you fill one of those in and give it to a leader we’ll be in touch with you through the week!
You are our guest, and no pressure will be put on you to fill a card in, and you can be as ‘known’ or ‘anonymous’ as you like! If you do feel like you’d like to find out more about our church family, then these cards help us stay in touch with you!
